David Godfrey joins W-Legal after 3 years with Hill Dickinson LLP following its merger with Middleton Potts, a niche firm specialising in all aspects of international trade and commerce, where David was a founding partner and head of its Corporate and Commercial Department for 33 years. Since qualifying in 1968, he has also undertaken both contentious and non-contentious work in banking and finance, insurance/ reinsurance, employment and intellectual property, acquiring the broadest commercial perspective and achieving widespread recognition for his expertise, versatility and holistic approach to client care.
With linguistic capabilities in French, German and Italian, David’s work often involves cross-border issues and he has particular expertise in advising overseas corporations on their UK operations and international contracts governed by English law. He is a Member of the Council of Management of the Italian Chamber of Commerce for the UK, an Officer of the International Bar Association and a Director of an English subsidiary of Italy’s largest independent oil company.
David has been profiled by Il Sole 24 Ore as a leader in Italy and has enjoyed regular editorial recognition in various sections of the Legal 500 and Chambers Law Directories. He has published articles in Butterworths and Sweet & Maxwell’s Journals of International Banking and Financial Law and Regulation on the role of English Law in international transactions and has made various presentations as a speaker at Annual Conferences of the International Bar Association. He is a keen collector and photographer and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Lisa has particular expertise in bribery and corruption, money laundering, fraud, tax evasion and market abuse matters and has acted for clients in some of the most high-profile cases brought by the SFO, FCA, CPS and other UK and international prosecution authorities. Many of those cases involved complex cross boarder issues such as requests made pursuant to mutual legal assistance treaties, double jeopardy, human rights, and extradition. Lisa has also successfully challenged decisions made by different prosecuting authorities in judicial review proceedings and under the victims right to review scheme.
In addition, Lisa has considerable experience acting for clients in civil fraud and director misfeasance cases, civil tax matters brought by HMRC, as well as personal and company insolvency matters.
Lisa is well known and respected in the industry as someone who can provide pragmatic and results oriented advice.
